What’s involved in being a pirate or policeman?

We are an ‘equal opportunities’ Society – should you be a soprano or alto, you will be very welcome to become a member of Major-General Stanley’s extended family; if you would like to be involved, but prefer to keep out of the limelight, there are many off-stage jobs for team members – please get in contact!

As a member of The Pirates of Penzance chorus, you need enthusiasm, plus a willingness to dress up, be made up, and be able to react to the bizarre twists in the plot. No auditions are necessary (unless you would like to take on a principal role).

You also need enough time. The Pirates of Penzance will be performed 16–18 February 2023; the chorus will rehearse on Wednesdays 7.30pm–9.30pm from 17 August until the show, with additional rehearsals on Sundays and Mondays after Christmas and during show week.

Rehearsals are at Limekilns Parish Church, 8 Church Street, Limekilns, KY11 3HT [Google Map at this link]. If getting to Limekilns is a problem, let us know. We can arrange to pick you up from and deliver you to somewhere mutually convenient.

What experience do I need?

Pirates and policemen are aged 18 upwards (no upper age limit). No previous experience is necessary – full training given (singing and acting).

What does membership involve?

Mostly it involves being there when needed! You will get a rehearsal schedule (let us know in the event of an unavoidable absence), and we can lend you a vocal score if you don’t have one.

When can I join?

Please contact the secretary, Ellen (ellen.patrick54@gmail.com or 07969 436957), as soon as possible to register your interest in joining and to be kept in the loop via email.

You are also welcome to come along to try it out once we start music rehearsals in mid-August. For further information, please email our Chair. In order to take part in this show, you need to have been coming to music rehearsals before we start production rehearsals ‘on the floor’ at the end of September.

Off-stage activities

We are a friendly group. Our Social and Fundraising Manager, Jack, will be inviting you to join the group that meets for a drink after chorus rehearsals. He’ll also invite you to come to other events throughout the year e.g. post-show and Christmas meals.

What does it cost?

The annual membership subscription for 2022–23 is £120. We ask members to pay £10/month by standing order, starting the month in which they join. Or you can pay £120 in full, by 31 October for returning members. Our Treasurer, Anne Dolbear, will be delighted to supply you with the appropriate form or details for on-line banking. (Please chat, in confidence, to Anne or to the Chair, Morag, if you are unable to afford the subscription)

Next appearance

Your next chance to see the Society on stage at Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline will be on 13–15 February 2025 for the première run of The Jury’s Out.
