New Committee
Thanks to everyone who attended last night’s AGM. Minutes will be available in due course, but we felt you would want to know about the Committee appointments – members serve for two years, so half the Committee retired by rotation.
Joy Campbell (left) becomes our Chairman in succession to George Alexander, who has wielded the gavel presented by Bill Tulloch to mark our 25th anniversary at the last eight AGMs. Grateful thanks to George for all the work he has put in so cheerfully during his time as our leader, and best wishes to Joy.
Sinead having been transferred to other duties (see below), her place as our Administration Manager has been taken by Ellen Patrick (right). Welcome aboard!
As well as these new faces, we reappointed members to four committee positions. Anne Dolbear (left) remains as Finance Manager and Ticket Sales Manager, and John Allen remains Programme Manager.
Sinead Williams (right) has transferred to the newly-created post of Social and Fund-Raising Manager. As it says in the new Clause 6h of the revised Constitution we adopted last night, Sinead will be “responsible for maintaining the social life of the Society, and for arranging such fund-raising activities as she deems suitable… and … will be on the lookout for new fund-raising opportunities and for ways to maximise the fund-raising potential of the Society’s existing activities.” The task couldn’t have gone to a better person!
Other members of the committee remain in post: there’s a full list at this link,
Grand Night
Our friends in the Edinburgh G&S Society invite us to celebrate the arrival of summer at the Queens Hall at 7.30pm on Saturday 27 May. Even if the weather lets us down, this glittering evening of music and song certainly won’t! Soloists and chorus from the Society, plus a full orchestra under the baton of David Lyle.
Tickets (£14, £11, £9) from the Queens Hall box office (0131 668 2019 or on-line).
AGM on 17 May
Current members should have received an email giving notification that the 47th Annual General Meeting of Dunfermline Gilbert and Sullivan Society is to be held on Wednesday 17 May 2017 at 7.30 pm in Whitefield Hospital, Dunfermline. The email contained links to a printable version of the AGM Agenda and a document with proposed changes to the Constitution. If you haven’t received this information, please contact our Chairman.
As the email said: “Following the excellent attendance at the General Meeting on 1 March, please make another big effort to attend the AGM”. See you there!
For your Wednesday delight …
You’ll see from the Home Page post that we’re having a sing-along of Iolanthe on 30 June. While this event is open to all, it would be good for the chorus to know some of the notes, so there will be some Wednesday rehearsals on dates to be announced.
One night you can definitely book, however, is Wednesday 17 May, when Whitefield will be the scene of our AGM. George has promised that he will be putting out information on the AGM in the next few days.
Sing-along Iolanthe
Be a peer (or a peri) for an evening! A fund-raising sing-along version of Iolanthe is planned for 7.30pm on Friday 30 June at St Margaret’s Memorial RC Church, East Port, Dunfermline. Soloists from the Society + piano accompaniment. Buy a ticket for £10 (available soon) and you will be able to sing along as the chorus, or simply listen.
G&S Jambouree
No, it’s not a mis-spelling … it’s a message from Alison Pendlowski to tell us that former Queen Anne Singers member Teenah Bee will be the Plaintiff in a version of Trial by Jury with a difference in St Leonard’s-in-the-Fields Church, Perth, at 7.00pm on Sunday 10 September. Favourite excerpts from other Gilbert and Sullivan operettas for the first half; Trial after the interval. The performance will be accompanied on two pianos played by Edna Auld, the founder of the Jambouree Cabaret Singers, and by Lorne Heriot-Maitland, with the choruses conducted by Rona Mackenzie.
If you are lucky enough to be under 25, there is also an opportunity to join the chorus! The rest of us will just have to enjoy the sight and sound of young people performing our favourite works … it’s a hard life! Click the image for full details.
Come to the ball!
Everyone is invited to put on their glad rags and come to the G&S Summer Ball, which is being held at the Carnegie Conference Centre on Friday 23 June. We’ll be joined by friends from Kirkcaldy and Edinburgh G&S Societies and Cat-Like Tread for dinner and a ceilidh, for which our very own Douglas Kerr and “Sounds Braw” will be playing. Note that the idea is to have fun among like-minded people, and this is not a fund-raising event!
Tickets are £40, and those who wish to attend need to pay a deposit of £10 each by 3 May, and the full amount by 5 June. For the account details to make a payment, please email Sinead.
If anyone would like to stay the night, the hotel is providing a discounted price of £70 for two people including breakfast, but only for rooms booked through us. Again, Sinead is your contact.
