Rehearsal aids

Eddie has provided some rehearsal aids for the numbers that are the next ones Rae that will be setting. He says: “It would help if the chorus could listen to their parts beforehand” …

The recordings to listen to are:

No.5 From the briny sea (alto)

No.9 Entrance of bridesmaids – If well his suit has sped (soprano)

Winter Bits!

kos_161218-thmb Kirkcaldy Orchestral Society (leader our very own Vince Gray) have chosen “Forty Favourites – the Best Bits and Hits” as their theme for this season, and the Christmas concerts reflect this, as you’ll see from the poster linked to the image.

The concerts at Old Kirk, Kirkcaldy, are on Sunday 18 December at 2.00pm and 4.00pm. Tickets are £8 adults, £4 children. Early booking recommended, as the concerts were sold out last year.

Come and sing Mozart

170121_soko_csmThose of you who like to ‘Come and Sing’ for charity will be interested in the Music for Malawi day on 21 January 2017 at St Cuthbert’s Church, Lothian Road, Edinburgh, when John Kitchen will conduct Mozart’s Requiem in aid of Soko Fund, which supports women into higher education in Malawi.

Details on the poster linked to the image – booking at Eventbrite. You can sing (starts 2.00pm), or just come along to the concert at 6.30pm, when the singers will be supported by Morley Whitehead on the organ and a fine team of soloists.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to our long-standing member Douglas Kerr and his new bride Jenny Matthew, who tied the knot at St James’ Church, Goldenacre, at the morning commnunion service on Sunday 23 October. Members of the Society were there to “see them sign, without a quiver” and to echo the words of the chorus in The Sorcerer: “With heart and with voice, let us welcome this mating”. Jenny is pictured here by Val firmly guiding Douglas towards the cake …

We trust that Douglas and Jenny will enjoy a long and happy life together in their new Edinburgh home. And we note an apology from one ‘Ghost of a Murgatroyd’ for his absence from rehearsals during their honeymoon!

More Music on Sundays

alexander-ullman_cThis weekend – 7.30pm on Sunday 16 October – sees the first of the six Dunfermline Arts Guild winter concerts. Alexander Ullman, rapidly making a name for himself in the classical music world, will be giving the Carnegie Hall piano a workout in a varied programme of Bach, Schumann, Stravinsky and Liszt.

You can buy tickets (£10; student/unemployed £1) from the Carnegie Hall box office (01383 602302; email boxoffice.carnegie@onfife.com) or at the door. An even better deal is to buy a season ticket for just £40, which lets you hear all six concerts for the price of four. For details of the concert season, click the image, visit www.daguild.co.uk, or talk to Martin or Jean.

Adam’s solo venture

adam_cuerden_cssmYou’ll know Adam from our bass line-up, and probably realise that he’s one of the folk in the Society who really knows his G&S. But did you know that he also writes music, and has combined this with his quirky sense of humour to create “a comedic evening of original songs”.

Adam will be at The Banshee Labyrinth (29–35 Niddry Street, Edinburgh, EH1 1LG) from 17:20–18:10 on Saturday 29 October, and would appreciate your support (and probably a beer afterwards, as well). “Learn of the perils of being an intellectual zombie, and why it’s not always a good idea for bite-sized morsels to befriend dragons!” More information on Adam’s Facebook event page.

Next appearance

Your next chance to see the Society on stage at Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline will be on 19–21 February 2026 in a sparkling production of Strictly Patience.
