Hear us carolling!
The carol concert at Clermiston planned for tonight has been called off because of the Forth Road Bridge closure. Not the kind of thing we normally do, but the alternatives are not realistic.
However, you can hear the same concert at 7:30pm tomorrow (Saturday 5 December) at the Catholic Church of The Holy Name, Station Road, Oakley. Set your satnav to KY12 9NW, part with £6 at the door, and enjoy the music!
By Saturday 19 December you should be in Christmas mood, so do come to a slightly-extended version of the concert at St Margaret’s Memorial RC Church in East Port, Dunfermline. The concert starts at 7:30pm, but we suggest coming early to get a good seat. Tickets £6 will be available at the door.
If you can’t wait that long, come to the Tesco store at Duloch on Saturday 12 December, where we’re singing carols at the entrance from 11.00am, with three sessions of just under an hour each. Proceeds from that will be going to Whitefield as usual.
Concert cancellation
Hopefully you will have received this email from George:
As you will have heard, the Forth Road Bridge is closed completely at least for 24 hours. Having considered all the consequences, options and alternatives in this exceptional situation, the decision has been taken to call off our concert in Clermiston.
It’s most unfortunate, and not the kind of thing we normally do, but the alternatives are not realistic. (The Kincardine Bridge route might work for getting home, but it’s likely to be under tremendous pressure at the time of going. This week it’s been backed up to Crombie at times, with the Forth Bridge still half-open. And Clermiston by train would mean a good walk and a fifteen minute bus trip at the other end. It may be possible (for some) going, but much more difficult to get back.) This may be a postponement rather than a cancellation, that remains to be seen.
We will regroup on Saturday evening for the concert in Holy Name (Oakley) as planned.
Carol singing
Almost there, folks! We are ready for our concerts – the concert programme can be downloaded here. And John has the beginnings of a group to sing at Tesco on Saturday 12 December, starting at 11.00am. There will be three sessions of just under an hour each. The list has been at Wednesday night rehearsal for the past two weeks and is filling up nicely, though numbers are slightly down on last year and next week John will be encouraging more to come along and sing! For health and safety reasons you need to be on his list in order to take part so, if you won’t be at next week’s rehearsal, drop him an email.
Concert rehearsals
Getting close to our first Christmas Carol concert on 4 December! Please note that there won’t be an afternoon rehearsal on Sunday 29 November, but on Wednesday 2 December Willie will be available from 6.30 for those who wish to rehearse their own items, and there will be the usual rehearsal for the whole group at 7.00.
John Greer-Spencer
The death of John Greer-Spencer earlier this month has left another sad gap in the ranks of past members of DGASS. John G-S, as we knew him, first appeared with us in our 1981 production of Patience and, if my collection of programmes is to be believed, he was a constant performer with us until our production of La Vie Parisienne in 2000. John was a stalwart member of the bass section, who could hold a bass harmony line with total accuracy and real quality. He was promoted on occasion to the rank of principal and gave numerous solo performances at our summer concerts.
John also played his part in the running of the Society and took great interest in the doings and pronouncements of the Management Committee. No AGM was complete without his contribution of searching questions and worthy suggestions. He himself served a term on the Committee as publicity manager during which he marketed a production of Sorcerer under the slogan “It’s Magic!”.
John was, by nature, a serious man who committed himself fully to any task or cause he undertook and we in DGASS were lucky that he chose to serve and support our Society with that customary dedication.
The sympathy of all of us who knew him goes out to his widow, Geraldine, and to his wider family.
Bill Tulloch
The photograph above, from Mary Kidd’s collection, shows John in the 1989 production of Pirates. If you look at the group photograph below, you’ll see Bill Tulloch at the bottom right, just in front of the inimitable Sid Jane – it was just after after the first Red Nose Day, and the producer was not best pleased to see a red nose on stage!
Society events
Mike and Sinead draw your attention to two things that are happening in 2016, at which you and your guests will be welcome:
Quiz Night. A fun fund-raising event is being organised by Kerry and Lindsay Black on Saturday 16 January (not 15 January as previously intimated). 7.30pm at Cowdenbeath Bowling Club, Bowling Green Street, Cowdenbeath KY4 9DF. For information and bookings, please contact Kerry Black via Facebook.
After-show meal. Saturday 19 March at Garvock House Hotel, St John’s Drive, Dunfermline, KY12 7TU. Please express interest to Sinead Black before Wednesday 3 December either on the sheet which will be out during tea at Wednesday rehearsals or via Facebook – whether the deposit required is to be £5 or £10 will be confirmed once numbers are known.
Carol rehearsal cancelled
Please pass on the message that the afternoon rehearsal planned for Sunday 15 November will now not take place. Business as usual at 7.00pm next Wednesday.
