G&S Jambouree

No, it’s not a mis-spelling … it’s a message from Alison Pendlowski to tell us that former Queen Anne Singers member Teenah Bee will be the Plaintiff in a version of Trial by Jury with a difference in St Leonard’s-in-the-Fields Church, Perth, at 7.00pm on Sunday 10 September. Favourite excerpts from other Gilbert and Sullivan operettas for the first half; Trial after the interval. The performance will be accompanied on two pianos played by Edna Auld, the founder of the Jambouree Cabaret Singers, and by Lorne Heriot-Maitland, with the choruses conducted by Rona Mackenzie.

If you are lucky enough to be under 25, there is also an opportunity to join the chorus! The rest of us will just have to enjoy the sight and sound of young people performing our favourite works … it’s a hard life! Click the image for full details.

Forty Favourites

Ellen Patrick (5th desk, 2nd violins … as well as a Ruddigore bridesmaid) invites us all to the Kirkcaldy Orchestral Society (KOS) spring concert in Dunfermline High School at 7.00pm on Friday 17 March.

The programme is varied. There’s a great soloist (Gregor Blamey) for Gershwin’s “Rapsody in Blue”. We’re also doing “Overture from Candide” and “Divertimento” by Bernstein, a suite of English Dances by Malcolm Arnold, Peter Maxwell Davis’s “Orkney Wedding with Sunrise”, the foot-tapping “Pops Hoe-down” by Hayman and a piece based on Scottish melodies called “Fanfare and Fugato”, written for the conductor, Graeme Wilson, by the KOS oboist, John Gourlay. Pupils from Dunfermline High School will also be performing. More details if you click the image.

DGASS members who were able to go to last year’s concert enjoyed the experience, so Ellen looks forward to seeing you on 17 March. There should be plenty of tickets available at the door, but they’re also available in advance from Fire Station Creative in Carnegie Drive (Wed–Sat, 10.00am–4.00pm; Fri/Sat, 5.00pm–11.00pm).

Get the bug!

ugly-bugWe’ve been enjoying the variety offered by the Dunfermline Arts Guild concerts, and their December offering – 7.30pm on Sunday 11 December – is again rather different. The Ugly Bug Ragtime Three are delivering “a Christmas treat of standards, rags and blues from the Golden Age of Jazz”. “Exuberant versions of well-known tunes by the likes of Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke”, plus tracks from their latest CD.

You can buy tickets (£10; student/unemployed £1) from the Carnegie Hall box office (01383 602302; email boxoffice.carnegie@onfife.com) or at the door. For details of the rest of the concert season, click the image, visit www.daguild.co.uk, or talk to Martin or Jean.

Winter Bits!

kos_161218-thmb Kirkcaldy Orchestral Society (leader our very own Vince Gray) have chosen “Forty Favourites – the Best Bits and Hits” as their theme for this season, and the Christmas concerts reflect this, as you’ll see from the poster linked to the image.

The concerts at Old Kirk, Kirkcaldy, are on Sunday 18 December at 2.00pm and 4.00pm. Tickets are £8 adults, £4 children. Early booking recommended, as the concerts were sold out last year.

Come and sing Mozart

170121_soko_csmThose of you who like to ‘Come and Sing’ for charity will be interested in the Music for Malawi day on 21 January 2017 at St Cuthbert’s Church, Lothian Road, Edinburgh, when John Kitchen will conduct Mozart’s Requiem in aid of Soko Fund, which supports women into higher education in Malawi.

Details on the poster linked to the image – booking at Eventbrite. You can sing (starts 2.00pm), or just come along to the concert at 6.30pm, when the singers will be supported by Morley Whitehead on the organ and a fine team of soloists.

More Music on Sundays

alexander-ullman_cThis weekend – 7.30pm on Sunday 16 October – sees the first of the six Dunfermline Arts Guild winter concerts. Alexander Ullman, rapidly making a name for himself in the classical music world, will be giving the Carnegie Hall piano a workout in a varied programme of Bach, Schumann, Stravinsky and Liszt.
