Fancy a part?
We now have both dates and full information for auditions on the Auditions page. If you fancy a principal part, but don’t know what would suit your talents, read what Fiona has written by way of “Notes on Characterisation and dialogue auditions”. The Auditions page has links to the bits of libretto you’ll need to have looked at: if you want to see the full extent of the part, the G&S archive has links to a full libretto in several formats and other useful resources.
When the boat came in!
Her Majesty’s Ship Pinafore duly set sail on Friday 22 June at St Margaret’s RC Memorial Church, East Port, Dunfermline, with our maestro Willie Campbell leading and accompanist Janet Barbour working harder than anyone to make the evening a musical success. Little Buttercup was there to welcome aboard both the crew and all Sir Joseph’s female relatives, and the church was pleasantly full of both singing and non-singing members of the audience. Grateful thanks to all those who contributed to the evening’s fun.
At the end of the evening, Joy Campbell presented a scrapbook of photographic memories to Mike Pendlowski to mark his retirement as our long-serving Production Manager, after 45 years of involvement with the Society.
If you took any photographs of the evening, or you would like to report on the sing-along from an audience perspective, do please email your webmaster
French nonsense from Gilbert
Adam Cuerden invites us to “Eyes and No Eyes or The Art of Seeing” W.S. Gilbert’s hilarious comedy about French nonsense, flirtatious nincompoops and fake news, presented by All in One Productions UK.
No tickets and no payments – just turn up to the Function Room in Revolution Bar, 30 Chambers Street EH1 1HU (opposite the National Museum of Scotland) and enjoy the show at 7:20pm on 12– 17 August.
Lovesick maidens a-plenty
Click on the image to enlarge it, and you’ll recognise a number of these young ladies … ‘heavy dragooned’, as one might say, into being the acolytes of a certain Reginald Bunthorne. His poetry might be pompous rubbish, but Cat-Like Tread’s production certainly won’t be!
As they put it: “Gilbert and Sullivan’s Patience aims its razor-sharp satire at the aesthetic movement (the hipsters of their day) in a tale of romance and the Romantic.” To see what Rae Lamond and her team make of this complicated thing called love, head for Venue 18 (Apex Grassmarket Hotel, EH1 2HS) at 7:30pm any night from 20–26 August. It will be popular, so think about booking in advance.
Cromlit’s are back
Our indefatigable orchestral leader Vince Gray invites us to St Margaret’s Memorial RC Church in Dunfermline for another evening of master works from the Baroque at 7:30pm on Friday 24 August.
Details of the programme are on the poster linked to the image and on the Cromlit’s Lilt Facebook page.
Sorcerer starting soon
With all the action focused on that Festival over the water (!), perhaps it’s time for a reminder that we start bringing out the rollicking buns later this month. The only firm date so far is the first musical rehearsal, which will be at Whitefield on Wednesday 29 August at 7.30pm. If you’re interested in auditioning for a principal role, then the musical items have been decided upon and appear at this link.
Apart from noting the date (and the dates for the show, which are 21–23 February 2019), please give thought to whom you might entice along to be one of the villagers of Ploverleigh … as always, men would be particularly welcome.
One day to launch!
Don’t forget that Her Majesty’s Ship Pinafore will be ready to sail tomorrow evening (Friday 22 June) at St Margaret’s RC Memorial Church, East Port, Dunfermline. Our maestro, Willie Campbell, and accompanist, Janet Barbour, will be in position, and Little Buttercup will be there to welcome aboard both the crew and all Sir Joseph’s female relatives.
Whether you want to sing or listen, just bring yourself, your voice (or hands to clap), and £10 to St Margaret’s to enjoy a fun evening!
