Music on Sundays

The Dunfermline Arts Guild 2017–18 series of chamber music concerts – “Music on Sundays” – kicked off with a programme of songs and guitar solos; their next offering, on 12 November 2017 at 7.30pm in the Carnegie Hall Studio, invites you to come dancing with Sirocco Winds. This wind quintet will be “taking us on a light-hearted journey across the ages, sampling the music that got everyone up on their feet, from Classical minuets to Latin American dances!”

Ask Jean Kennedy or Martin Tarr for a personal recommendation – you can’t beat live music, and it’s great value for £10 (less for season tickets)! Details about the other Sunday evening concerts, which take place at Carnegie through to March, are in the linked brochure – there’s a wealth of musical talent, in a variety of ensembles and styles to suit everyone.

Rehearsal schedule

The PDF file at this link has Issue 1 of Rae’s production schedule for chorus members. Page 2 is a list of the scenes in Mikado, which will help you interpret what we are doing each session. The bits to look out for are those in bold, which highlight the Sunday/Monday rehearsals and any sessions where specific groups have been called. There will be a small supply of printed copies at the rehearsal tomorrow.

Cast list announced

We are thrilled to announce our principal cast for The Mikado (22–24 February 2018).  It’s a mix of old friends and new faces, all looking forward to bringing the town of Titipu to life on the stage of the Carnegie Hall. Our former President George Alexander will be exercising his committee experience as Pooh-Bah, the very important town official, ably assisted by Martin Tarr as Pish-Tush. Sinead Black reprises the role of Peep-Bo, and we welcome Lindsey Cotter and Katy Williamson as Yum-Yum and Pitti-Sing to complete the classic Three Little Maids line-up. Alex Gunn wanders our way as the dashing tenor lead Nanki-Poo, pursued by His Royal Highness The Mikado of Japan, played by Matthew Sielewicz. Susanne Horsburgh and Robin Ozog complete the line-up, driving the action as Katisha and KoKo.

It’s going to be a busy few months for the Society as we put together a vibrant Mikado, with some unexpected twists and turns. The chorus of Ladies and Gentlemen of Japan are already being put through their paces by MD Eddie Maclennan and Director Rae Lamond. We already can’t wait to show you when we hit the stage next year.

EGM 1 November

There will be an Extraordinary General Meeting of Society members on Wednesday 1 November 2017, approximately 15 minutes before the end of the rehearsal (Whitefield Day Hospital, Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline). This will allow members to vote on the proposal to use HMS Pinafore for the 2018 Summer Sing Along concert and for the 2019 February production to be The Sorcerer (last performed in 2010). Suggestions from the membership for an appropriate non-G&S show, which could be performed in February 2020, may also be brought to this meeting.

Oklahoma! in Edinburgh

Edinburgh Gilbert & Sullivan Society has the perfect antidote to those post-summer blues – saddle up for their production of Oklahoma! at the Church Hill Theatre from  25–28 October! Their president says: “We are excited to present Rodgers & Hammerstein’s world-famous tale of love, adventure, rivalry, and cowboys. We’ve worked really hard on our set dances and would love for you to see them! … this energetic show will have you line-dancing all the way home.”

This year EDGAS have allocated seating, so get your order in now if you’d like to secure the best seats.  You can order tickets by following the link to www.ticketsource.co.uk/edgas.

Music for a While

“A musical delight for voice and keyboard” is on offer at Holy Trinity Church, Stirling at 7.00pm on Saturday 30 September.

Ulrike Wutscher (mezzo-soprano), accompanied by Alistair Warwick on harpsichord and organ, sings settings by Monteverdi, Schütz and Purcell and three operatic arias by Handel. Most of these are either well-known or ought to be! This georgeous programme is even free, though donations are welcome.

Coming at Christmas

Coming actually just before Christmas is our Christmas Concert, which this year is an afternoon affair, for those who are either busy partying in the evenings, or don’t like coming out in the cold and dark.

We have booked St Margaret’s Memorial RC Church, East Port, Dunfermline, for a concert at 2.30pm on Sunday 10 December. Please keep the date, and pass on the message. And if you know of folk who’d like to join in from the front, rather than be part of the audience, do get in touch with our Chair, the lady in the photograph!

For those who want even more carols, we’ll be back at Tesco’s Duloch store later the same week, from 3:30pm on Saturday 16 December.

Next appearance

Your next chance to see the Society on stage at Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline will be on 19–21 February 2026 in a sparkling production of Strictly Patience.
