As well as this publicly-available list, we announced that Frances McCafferty, for many years our Honorary President, would be making a “guest appearance”. The nature of her role was carefully kept under wraps until the first night, when the audience found out that Frances was playing Katisha – “the lady from our travels”, as Richard and Henry found out when the wedding celebrations of Richard and Sally were interrupted by her unexpected appearance. Needless to say, this secret was explained in neither synopsis nor programme!
Frances’ role was in fact more than the cameo that “guest appearance” suggests … after Katisha arrives on stage at the end of Act 1, she doesn’t leave it, being discovered when the curtain rises on Act 2 occupying the Judge’s seat, and making off with the Judge at the end of the show: “Oh joy!” “Oh rapture!” “Oh rapture!” “Oh joy!”. And it was indeed a joy for our amateur cast to work with a consummate professional of Frances’ calibre.
